Hello. I'm Scott Austin.
I been involved in Roller Derby in San Diego since 2011. I was at the local skate rink when I saw sign that said they were starting a men's derby team. And I thought to myself, I get to be on skates and hit people - sign me up!
I played on the San Diego Aftershocks from 2011 to 2016. After two broken legs and a shattered (the medical term my doctor used) wrist, I called an end to my days as a derby player.
I started coaching our kids team back in 2013. And now, that's my main derby outlet.
I coach the 12-and-under Mini-Tremors (Tremors and Aftershocks - you can see our San Diego theme at work). We are Open Division and full contact. Coaching the kids is so much fun. I'm still amazed at how quickly they learn new skills. In an hour, they can do things that took me years to get down.
Way before I put on roller skates for derby, I was an inline skater. My '90s were spent on inlines in New York City. Great, great times.
